Praying for othersOther people are sometimes a mystery – but Jesus bids us to pray for them all, even those we might call our enemies (Matthew 5:44; Luke 6:28). There may be people around you for whom you find it almost too easy to name the principal sin. All you have ever seen – or all you have ever registered – is the negative side – the corrupt form – of their engagement with yourself and the world. But the sin reveals the strategy, and the strategy points to the gifts. If you know the sin, you know the vocation: you know God’s invitation to that person, their potential place within the body of Christ. You can hold that knowledge as a sacred trust – and you can hold that trust in your prayers. |
