Myers-Briggs / MBTI

If you are familiar with the MBTI you will already recognise the value of a system which identifies patterns of characteristics within the diversity which is humankind - but you will find that the enneagram is a broader, deeper, more powerful and more intuitive system than MBTI.

The enneagram covers much more of life. In its simple pattern of nine overlapping types, it manages to identify for each individual far more in terms of thoughts, emotions and actions than the categories of MBTI. You will find the enneagram easier to use for understanding others as well as yourself.

You will find that the enneagram - as presented in Head versus Heart - feels less artificial. It is not built on the psychodynamic philosophies of Freud and Jung, but on the familiar concepts of ‘head’ and ‘heart’ - ‘head’ for logic and reason and ‘heart’ for emotions and dreams - plus ‘gut’ - as in ‘gut reaction’ - for instinct and intuition.

The enneagram has a far more systematic understanding of the way people change - across the years or just through the day.

And the enneagram has more direct connections with mainstream Christian spirituality: Head versus Heart includes sections on the seven deadly sins, the major spiritual gifts, different patterns of prayer, and biblical heroes of each of the nine types.

Finally, far from ‘typing you and abandoning you’, Head versus Heart plots the nine different routes from where we are now to the very best of what we are called to be.
