ConclusionFor the first time Head versus Heart lays open the underlying logical structure of the enneagram. It explains why the nine types exist as they do, why they can be arranged around a circle in a specific order, and why they interconnect to form a distinctive irregular pattern of internal lines. We cannot know how much of this underlying logic was understood by Gurdjieff and Ichazo or how much they were simply ‘going by instinct’ – but the underlying logic of the system has been uncovered, and the system is sound. The Strategy Board is a powerful system ‘for understanding both yourself and other people.’ Its assumptions are the assumptions of faith: that when we speak of the experience of humankind we must speak of sin and redemption, of temptations and gifts, and of participation in the community of Christ. It is fundamentally outward looking – concerned with the nature of our engagement with the world, with recognizing and valuing the gifts of others, and with discerning our own vocation in the world. It is logical and rational throughout – with clear links to cognitive, behavioral, and even neurological psychology: the psychology of the mainstream scientific community. It traces every detail of the system back to the simple familiar concepts of ‘head’ and ‘heart’ – plus ‘gut,’ as in ‘gut instinct’ and ‘gut reaction.’ It has plotted a map of humankind and a map of the spiritual journeys we make – that we might better understand ourselves and other people, discern our own vocation in the world, avoid the temptations around us, and grow in the grace of our God-given gifts. |
