A chosen moveWe have already examined the phenomenon of a ‘chosen’ wing. The same thing can happen with stress and security types: people sometimes choose a move. In some complex situation, someone’s usual strategy may appear not to be working – so they consciously choose to take on a different role, to adopt a different approach. This will only work if they choose a strategy that is within their reach. It could be one of their wings, as noted above – or it could be a move across the board to their stress type or their security type. And they could spend decades there. As with a chosen wing, if someone’s type seems just a little too obvious, just a little too much of a caricature, just a little too artificial or forced, then it may well not be their true type at all but their stress type or their security type. Once again, they are likely to be quite unhappy there, in that false adopted role – at least once its temporary purpose has expired, and they find themselves a long way from home, unsure what to do next. The easy challenge is to stay put and try to ‘redeem’ the chosen type, but this is not a long-term solution. The greater challenge is to find a way back home, there to face the home base temptations, and there to reclaim the original calling and vocation – the gifts of home base. |
