Overview – the symmetry of the board
The strategy board is built on these two familiar aspects of our inner lives: the head, for logic and reason, and the heart, for emotions and dreams. When we have time to consider at length, this is the conflict again and again: to follow the head or to follow the heart. The contrast between the two is the first fundamental dynamic of the strategy board.
Instinct and intuition – the ‘gut’ influence – work in a different way, closer to the point where a decision has to be made. In the complexity of our interactions with the world, head and heart are one kind of influence – internal and self-conscious – and gut is another – unselfconscious, immediate, practical, and direct.
The strategy board has been arranged to highlight this difference. Head and heart go side by side in the lower part of the board, representing the self-conscious inner life, while the gut zone is alone at the top of the board, representing direct engagement with the world.
This arrangement gives the board a heart side – the right hand side of the board – and a head side – the left hand side of the board. Everything on the right hand side – the heart side – is either heart zone or heart influenced, and everything on the left hand side – the head side – is either head zone or head influenced. And the board has a continuous vertical scale – from ‘direct engagement’ at the top of the board, to ‘deep in the inner life’ at the foot of the board.
The one great contrast on the board remains the contrast between the head side, for logic and reason, and the heart side, for emotions and dreams – with various degrees of the third ‘gut’ influence filtering down from the top of the board.
